Outstanding Achievement in Youth Participation Award

Z & M Co – Zara Skepev

Z and M Co., founded by nine-year-old Zara Skepev, empowers women in brain cancer research through creative fundraising. Each year, Zara partners with a new friend, and together they handcraft over 400 earrings, with proceeds supporting the Zara Skepev Fund for Women in Brain Cancer Research at ANU. Inspired by her dream of balancing a career in science and motherhood, Zara has raised over $30,000, helping two female researchers continue their work. Her efforts inspire young people to get involved in fundraising and support women’s empowerment in research.

Z and M Co. is an outstanding example of youth-led initiative and meaningful engagement. The program, led by Zara Skepev and supported by her friends and family, demonstrates a deep commitment to youth participation by involving young people aged 5 to 16 in every aspect of their fundraising activities. By engaging both boys and girls of all ages, Zara showcases the importance of inclusivity. From handcrafting earrings to planning events and setting up stalls, Zara has shown that even the youngest members of our community can make a tangible impact. Each year, she invites a different friend of a similar age to join her as a business partner, fostering shared leadership and collaboration. Additionally, Zara encourages other young children and teenagers to assist during the stalls, with her teenage brother proudly joining her in making the earrings. This unique approach not only builds a supportive community but also ensures skill development among participants.

The project has successfully integrated best practices for youth participation by creating a safe, nurturing environment where young people’s ideas are heard and valued. Zara’s initiative supports a cause that resonates deeply with her peers, fostering a sense of responsibility and empowerment. It teaches children vital public speaking and sales skills, encouraging them to be creative in grabbing the customers attention. Her collaboration with the Australian National University’s Professor Leonie Quinn has raised over $30,000 through the Zara Skepev Fund for Women in Brain Cancer Research, allowing young people involved in this endeavour to see their efforts directly contribute to critical advancements in research.

Through Z and M Co., Zara has developed meaningful partnerships that highlight the power of youth leadership. Young people gain experience in project management, teamwork, and philanthropy while becoming role models in their communities.
